On 6th May 1999, the Honourable Defence Minister, YB Dato' Abang Abu Bakar bin Datu Bandar Abang Haji Mustapha including senior military and civilian officials from the Ministry of Defence visited AIROD.

At the same occasion, the Honourable Defence Minister witnesses the contract signing ceremony for the maintenance support contractorisation of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Alouette III aircraft.
This contractorisation concept was introduced by the Malaysian Government and approved in late 1997, enabling the private sector to fully provide total maintenance support and services of Government's assets. Furthermore, this concept will enable the shortages of skilled and technical manpower currently experienced by RMAF be overcomed.

In addition to the signing ceremony, AIROD's President, Tan Sri' Dato' Ahmad bin Johan was conferred with the Honorary Colonel TUDM, by the Honourable Defence Minister. This conferment is in recognition for his contribution to the Malaysian aerospace industry and the unique role he plays as the President of AIROD within the context of the nation's defence.
