AIROD/SME EXHIBITION PARTICIPATION AT
AMD'99, MANILA

 

 

AIROD Sendirian Berhad, SME Ordnance & SME Aviation participated in the 6th International Aviation, Maritime & Defence Exhibition held at the Philippine Trade Training Center in Manila, the Republic of Philippines. The Malaysian delegation were headed by the President of Aerospace Industries Malaysia (AIM), Left. Gen. (R) Dato' Seri Yunus Tasi and Vice President & CEO of AIROD, Brig. Gen (R) Dato' Abdul Rahim Abdul Rahman. More than 50 companies from fourteen countries participated in the exhibition.

AIROD's presence was to market its capability in total aircraft maintenance as well as to provide continuous support to the Philippines Department of National Defence and in particular to the Philippine Air Force, PAF. Up todate, AIROD has accomplished Programmed Depot Maintenance (PDM), Avionics Upgrade and miscellaneous structural repairs on a number of PAF's 220th Airlift Wing C-130 Hercules.

SME Aviation participation was to market the SME's MD3-160 "AeroTiga", a two-seater aircraft suitable for training, leisure and aerobatics flying. Meanwhile, SME Ordnance, the manufacturer of the STEYR AUG Rifle (calibre 5.56mm) and the STEYR Tactical Machine Pistol, TMP (calibre 9mm) as well as a variety of ammunition and pyrotechnics is exploring new business opportunities.

The exhibition was a platform of opportunity to the Philippines Armed Forces, having been looking to upgrade the capabilities of all their three services and are looking to acquire among others multi-role fighters, patrol craft, naval helicopters, anti-tank missile systems, surveillance and communication systems, long range patrol aircraft, Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopters and air defence radars.

Prior to the exhibition, the Philippines Department of National Defence lauched the "AFP Modernisation Program", aims to develop the strategic, operational and tactical capability of the AFP. It includes acquisition and upgrading of AFP's equipment, development priorities, estimated costs, and schedules within the next fifteen years. Technical, financial, and countertrade benefits will be the basic parameters in the evaluation of the particular project.
